Is Outlier legit? Pay, workers and court records

Yes, Outlier is legit. It is a real platform run by Scale AI, it pays every week, and thousands of people say they get paid. What it doesn't do is promise work. Most of the complaints we've read are about empty queues and switched-off accounts.
Here is the evidence, with the date I checked each piece. I looked at Outlier's own pages, its terms, Trustpilot, several news reports and the court records on 9 October 2026.
We don't list Outlier jobs on our board, and we earn nothing if you join. If you want the short review, it's at Outlier AI review. This post goes deeper.
Who is behind Outlier
Outlier's terms of use name the company: "Scale AI, Inc., a Delaware corporation, and its affiliates, including Smart Ecosystem Inc., doing business as Outlier AI". The terms are dated 11 May 2026.
Outlier's About page says "$600M+" paid to experts, "900K+" Outlier Experts and "52" countries. Those are company claims, and I couldn't check them independently.
Do people get paid?
Yes. Outlier's FAQ says payments go out weekly on Tuesdays, for work done the previous Tuesday to Monday (midnight UTC), by PayPal, Airtm or ACH bank transfer.
Trustpilot shows 4.1 out of 5 from 5,483 reviews (9 October 2026). The split:
| Stars | Share of reviews |
|---|---|
| 5 | 62% |
| 4 | 13% |
| 3 | 3% |
| 2 | 3% |
| 1 | 19% |
Read that as two groups. Most reviewers are happy. About one in five is very unhappy. When we read the one-star reviews on 7 October, they were mostly about accounts being switched off and long spells with no work, not about unpaid invoices.
What Outlier pays
Outlier doesn't publish one rate. Its FAQ says: "Rates vary by expertise, project complexity, and location. You'll always see the tasking rate before starting any project."
These are the rates on five of its role pages on 9 October 2026:
| Role page | Pay shown |
|---|---|
| Hindi language, India | Up to $7.50/hr |
| Danish language, Denmark | Up to $30/hr |
| Coding, Latin America | Up to $34/hr |
| Personal finance, India | Up to $53/hr |
| Machine learning | Up to $150/hr |
See Outlier pay by role.
Three things to know before you read those numbers.
- They are "up to" figures. Nobody is promised the top number.
- Lower rates apply to some work. The Hindi and machine learning pages both say lower rates can apply to "non-core work, such as during initial project onboarding or project overtime phases".
- Bonuses are small. The pages say contributors earn about 7.5% more on average through "Missions", with top performers around 11%.
Independent reporting lands lower than the headline rates. In a Forbes piece (29 April 2025), one of Outlier's busier contractors said: "I usually make around $25 to $30 per hour." The same article said Outlier contractors "on average work about six hours a week".
AlgorithmWatch (9 August 2025) spoke to Outlier workers once unpaid training, admin and meetings were counted. A US worker put the real rate at under $5 an hour. A German worker said about $7. That's only two people, but it shows how far a good rate can sit from a normal week.
Why people say "no tasks"
Outlier's FAQ says there are "no minimum hour requirements". That works both ways: you choose your hours, and Outlier doesn't promise you any. Here is what the record shows about why work dries up.
- Customers moved. In June 2025 Meta took a 49% stake in Scale AI for $14.3 billion. Fortune, citing Bloomberg and Reuters, reported that OpenAI was phasing out its work with Scale and that Google planned to cut ties. OpenAI said Scale was "a small fraction of OpenAI's overall data needs" and that it had already started winding down the relationship.
- Generalist work shrank. In October 2025 Scale closed a Dallas team of contractors that did generalist tasks such as improving chatbot writing. Business Insider reported that a Scale spokesperson said the cuts "reflect an industry shift toward higher skill, expert data work". Laid-off contractors were invited to join Outlier.
- Outlier can switch you off. Its terms say it may "deactivate or suspend your account... at any time, immediately without prior notice for any reason."
If you have passed screening and nothing arrives, you're not doing anything wrong. Read passed the interview but no projects for what to do, and keep a second platform on the go.
The lawsuits
Two court cases are worth knowing about. Both are about how Scale treats contractors.
- McKinney v. Scale AI (CGC-24-620481). A California contractor sued in December 2024, saying workers were misclassified as contractors and underpaid. It settled for $12.5 million for California workers who worked for Scale, Smart Ecosystem or similar between 10 December 2020 and 28 February 2026. The final approval hearing is on 30 October 2026 (ClaimDepot). No claim form is needed for eligible workers.
- Harmful-content class action. In January 2025 six taskers sued Scale AI, Outlier AI and Smart Ecosystem. They say they were repeatedly exposed to disturbing material, including content about suicide and child abuse, without enough warning or support (classaction.org, 28 January 2025). I found no ruling. These are allegations.
A US Department of Labor investigation into Scale was dropped in May 2025 without public findings (TechCrunch, 9 May 2025).
The terms also send disputes to individual arbitration and waive class actions, with a 30-day window after you accept to opt out in writing.
How to tell the real Outlier from a fake
Outlier is a well-known name, so scammers copy it. The real one does these things:
- It lets you start for free. You never pay to apply, for training or for equipment.
- It asks for ID and checks your location as part of onboarding. That is normal. Only upload ID after signing in on outlier.ai itself.
- It sends you to outlier.ai to apply, not to a chat on Telegram or WhatsApp.
If someone messages you offering Outlier work, don't use their link. Go to outlier.ai and look for the role there. Our guide on how to spot a remote AI job scam has five two-minute checks.
Who should and shouldn't bother
You need at least an associate degree. Outlier's FAQ says: "You need at least an associate degree to work on Outlier. Certain projects may require a bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree." If you have no degree, Outlier isn't open to you. See AI training jobs with no degree instead.
Outlier is a fair bet if you have a skill it pays well for, such as coding, a STEM field or a language in demand. It's a poor bet if you need steady hours or a fixed income.
Treat it as extra income, and apply to two or three platforms so one quiet month doesn't leave you with nothing. Outlier AI alternatives compares eight, and Outlier AI vs DataAnnotation puts the two best-known side by side. The hiring tracker shows which platforms we list are hiring this week.
