AI training jobs for students: what you can apply for

Many platforms take students, but where a minimum age is stated it is 18, and several want a degree you may not have finished. Each platform's own rules are below.
Many AI training platforms do take students, but most won't take anyone under 18, and several want a degree you may not have finished yet. Of the 1,194 roles on our board, only 3% say no degree is needed (statistics, 9 October 2026). So the honest answer is: it depends on the platform, and below is what each one says.
Everything here comes from each platform's own terms, FAQ or job listing, read on 9 October 2026, except the Alignerr FAQ, re-read on 13 October 2026. Where a platform says nothing, I say "not stated" and don't guess.
The short version
- Under 18: where a platform states a minimum age, it is 18. That covers Outlier, DataAnnotation, Alignerr, micro1, Turing, Terac, CrowdGen by Appen and OneForma. I found nothing that lets a high school student join the remote AI training platforms we cover.
- Undergraduates: some platforms say students can apply. Several others set a degree minimum. A degree in progress is not a degree, and no platform I read says it counts as one.
- Postgraduate students: more options. Handshake AI shows listings for Master's, PhD and postdoc applicants, and specialist tracks such as DataAnnotation's STEM track ask for a master's or PhD.
- International students: your visa may stop you. Mercor and Handshake AI both spell this out, and I quote them below.
Platform by platform
| Platform | Minimum age | Students? | Degree rule | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Outlier | 18, or age of legal majority (terms) | Yes: "students of legal working age can work part-time" (FAQ) | At least an associate degree | 9 Oct 2026 |
| DataAnnotation | 18 (contract) | Not stated | "Bachelor's degree or equivalent real-world experience" for general work | 9 Oct 2026 |
| Handshake AI | Not confirmed | Yes, on its Generalist listing: "Current students pursuing an Associate's, Bachelor's, or Master's degree" | Varies by listing | 9 Oct 2026 |
| Mercor | Not stated (must be able to "form a legally binding contract") | Yes, on some listings, with limits for student visas | Varies by listing | 9 Oct 2026 |
| Meridial (Invisible) | Not stated | Yes: it has a "College students & recent grads" page | Not stated | 9 Oct 2026 |
| CrowdGen by Appen | 18 (terms) | Welcomed: "Whether you're a student, a stay-at-home parent, a professional, or a retiree" | "Most of our projects don't require technical skills, just domain expertise" | 9 Oct 2026 |
| Rex.zone | Legal working age in your residence | FAQ says "Yes, as long as you meet the legal working age" | "At least a bachelor's degree" | 9 Oct 2026 |
| micro1 | 18 (terms) | Not stated | Varies by listing | 9 Oct 2026 |
| Turing | "Above the age of 18" (terms) | Not stated | Varies by listing | 9 Oct 2026 |
| Terac | 18 (terms) | Not stated | "Typically require undergraduate-level expertise" | 9 Oct 2026 |
| Alignerr | 18 (terms) | Yes: its FAQ says "as an independent contractor, you can work when and for however long you like" | "Some projects do have specific educational requirements", so check the job posting | 13 Oct 2026 |
| Mindrift | "Legal age requirements" where you live; 21+ for some projects | All-access tasks are "open to everyone", with "no education, experience, or skill requirements" | Specialised projects usually want a relevant degree | 9 Oct 2026 |
| OneForma | 18 (terms) | Not stated | Not stated | 9 Oct 2026 |
| xAI, HumanSignal, Welo Data, TELUS Digital AI, Ethos | Not stated on their public pages, except one Welo posting that says "at least 18" | Not stated | Varies by role | 9 Oct 2026 |
Two notes on the table.
- Rex.zone contradicts itself. Its FAQ says students can apply, and also says "REX requires all contributors to have at least a bachelor's degree." The likely reading is that students who already hold a bachelor's, such as master's students, can apply. The page doesn't say so, so ask before you spend time on it.
- Mercor's student listing has strings. One Mercor listing for an education role says it's hiring "Individuals currently enrolled in or recently graduated from academic programs". The same listing lists a bachelor's degree as the minimum and at least two years of professional experience. Read the "Basic Qualifications" on any listing before you apply.
If you're under 18
Where a platform states a minimum age, it is 18. Outlier's terms say "at least 18 years old or the age of legal majority in your jurisdiction". micro1's say "at least eighteen (18) years of age". DataAnnotation's contract says "at least 18 years of age to act as a data labeler".
Mindrift says it only engages people who "meet the legal age requirements for paid opportunities in their location". Its pages don't give a number, so don't assume anything under 18.
If you're 16 or 17, don't use a parent's identity or misstate your age. These platforms ask for ID.
If you're an international student
Your visa is often the limit. Several platforms say so directly.
- Mercor, UK: "Mercor cannot engage with individuals on a Student visa in the UK."
- Mercor, US: CPT work is allowed "if the work is integral to their curriculum and authorized by their educational institution". It says "we do not engage contractors under STEM OPT status".
- Handshake AI: you must be "based in the U.S." with a valid work authorisation that Handshake can support. It says "F-1 students who are eligible for CPT or OPT may be eligible. STEM OPT is not supported." It tells students to "work with your Designated School Official".
- Outlier: "Your visa must permit work", and it does not sponsor visas.
- xAI and Rex.zone: neither offers visa sponsorship.
This is not legal or immigration advice. Ask your school's international office before you take any paid work.
What students can expect to earn
Pay for entry-level work is lower than the headline numbers for experts. From our live data (9 October 2026):
- Rating, data and voice work has a typical starting rate of $26 an hour across the platforms we check.
- Meridial's student page advertises "$15 to $20/hour" for evaluating search results.
- Welo Data's typical rate is $25 an hour, and RWS TrainAI's is $16 an hour.
- Outlier's role pages show "up to" $7.50 an hour for a Hindi role in India and up to $34 for coding in Latin America.
Postgraduate students and strong coders can aim higher. Our board lists coding roles with a typical start of $60 an hour. Expect that only if you meet the experience bar on the listing.
Roles open right now with no degree needed
On 9 October 2026, 8 of the 376 roles we list as hiring said no degree was needed. Some examples:
| Role | Platform | Pay | Who can apply |
|---|---|---|---|
| Norwegian, Finnish or Danish Transcription Expert | micro1 | $20 to $30 an hour (Danish $24 to $30) | Worldwide except 21 places |
| Video Editor, UX/UI Designer | micro1 | $50 to $90 an hour | Worldwide except 21 places |
| Paid English Conversation Recording Study | Rex.zone | $20 an hour | US, CA, UK +2 |
| Generalist Expert | AI expert network | $40 to $70 an hour | US, CA, UK +1 |
These change every night, so check the no-degree job list for what's open. "No degree" doesn't mean "no age limit": the 18+ rules above still apply.
How a student should start
- Check your age and visa first. Those two decide most of your options.
- Match yourself to the rules. An undergraduate with no degree is best placed for CrowdGen by Appen, Meridial's student projects and Mindrift's all-access tasks. A master's or PhD student should look at Handshake AI, Mercor and the expert platforms.
- Apply to two platforms, not one. Being accepted doesn't mean getting hours. Our guide on getting your first AI training job covers the four steps.
- Take the screening seriously. Platforms test careful reading and clear writing, not your CV.
- Never pay to start. Real platforms pay you. If someone asks for a fee or a deposit, or only talks to you on Telegram or WhatsApp, it's a scam. See how to spot a remote AI job scam.
Fit it around your studies
There are no guaranteed hours on any of these platforms. That suits a timetable, because you can do more in a quiet week and less in exam season. It also means you can't plan your rent around it. Treat it as extra income. You are an independent contractor, so you handle your own tax. How AI training pay works explains the basics.
